Hammock History

The Hammock gained its name as it was first made from the bark of a Hamak tree roughly a thousand years ago in South America / Caribbean. The Hamak bark was replaced by fibres of the Sisal plant as its more abundant. The first hammocks were brought to Europe by Columbus in around 1500. By 1600 the hammock was embraced by the English Navy as it provided a safe and comfortable means of sleep (until then sleeping on deck was the norm & in high seas this proved problematic). In 1841 "Hammock" was listed in the English dictionary of sea terms as piece of canvas, hung either end, in which seamen sleep. It was through the sailors using the hammock for rest that made hammocks a popular item for leisure with friends and families in north America and Europe.
